Water Damage Plaster Repair & Insurance Claims: How It Works

25 July 20265 min read

Dealing with water damaged plaster and an insurance claim on the Fraser Coast — the process, the paperwork, and what a proper repair looks like.

Burst pipe, leaky roof, storm damage — water and plaster don't get along. Good news: most of it is covered by home insurance, and if you handle it in the right order, the claim usually goes through smooth. Here's how it actually works.

Step 1 — Stop the water first

Sounds obvious but people ring the plasterer before they've stopped the leak. Fix the source (plumber, roofer, tarp on the roof) before anything else. Insurance won't cover damage that kept happening after you knew about it.

Step 2 — Document everything

  • Photos of every damaged wall, ceiling, floor — wide shots and close-ups.
  • Video walkthrough with narration is even better.
  • Keep any damaged items until the assessor sees them.
  • Write down date and time you noticed the damage.

Step 3 — Lodge the claim

Ring your insurer, give them the photos, timeline and cause. They'll either send an assessor or ask for quotes from licensed tradies. Most Fraser Coast insurers have a preferred builder network, but you're usually allowed to pick your own.

Step 4 — Dry it out (before you plaster)

Plastering over wet framing or wet insulation is a mould factory waiting to happen. Get a restoration mob in with dehumidifiers and moisture meters, or wait for full natural dry-out (weeks, not days). We won't sheet or stop over anything that reads wet.

Step 5 — Repair

  1. 1Cut out damaged plasterboard back to sound board on the studs/joists.
  2. 2Replace insulation if it got wet.
  3. 3New sheets in, screwed off, joins taped.
  4. 4Three-coat stop, sand, blend into the surrounding surface.
  5. 5Match texture on ceilings if needed.
  6. 6Paint-ready handover — painter usually does the whole wall/ceiling so it blends.
