The honest difference between Level 4 and Level 5 plaster finish — where each one belongs, and where paying for Level 5 is just burning money.
Plaster finish levels are one of those things nobody explains until you're on job three and getting confused about why one room looks different to another. Here's the plain English version.
The five levels (quick version)
- Level 0 — Bare board. Garages, storage, sheds. No stopping.
- Level 1 — Fire-rated joins only. Behind bulkheads, above ceilings.
- Level 2 — Tile substrate. Behind wall tiles.
- Level 3 — Basic stop. Textured finishes, garages.
- Level 4 — Standard for painted domestic walls and ceilings.
- Level 5 — Premium. Full skim over the whole surface.
Level 4 — what you get
Joins taped and coated three times. Screw heads coated twice. Corner beads finished. Sanded flush. Under normal lighting with a matte or low-sheen paint, you won't see joins. This is the finish 90% of Hervey Bay homes have, and it looks perfect for the vast majority of rooms.
Level 5 — what you get on top
Everything in Level 4, plus a full skim coat of compound over the entire wall surface. This kills any tiny variation between the paper of the board and the compound over joins/screws. It's the difference between very good and mirror-flat.
When Level 5 is actually worth it
- Feature walls with harsh raking light (big windows nearby, wall sconces).
- Gloss or semi-gloss paint — shows every imperfection.
- Dark wall colours — same, they highlight anything.
- Big open living spaces where the wall is a hero surface.
- Commercial fit-outs, showrooms, high-end reno.
When it's a waste of money
- Bedrooms with normal lighting and matte paint — nobody will ever notice.
- Hallways, laundries, walk-in robes.
- Textured or coloured feature walls (you're covering it anyway).
- Rental properties — over-spec for the market.
Cost difference
Level 5 typically adds 25–40% to the plastering cost of that area. On a whole house it's a big number. Most people we work with do Level 5 on 1–2 hero walls and Level 4 everywhere else — best of both worlds.
