Gyprock Installation in Hervey Bay: What You Actually Need to Know

Gyprock's the standard plasterboard we use on nearly every Hervey Bay job. Sounds simple — screw the sheets up, stop the joins. In practice, using the wrong board in the wrong room is one of the most common reasons a house gets mould, sagging or cracked joins a few years down the track.

The main sheet types

• Standard 10mm — most walls in dry rooms (bedrooms, living, hallways).
• 13mm — ceilings and anywhere you want extra rigidity or a bit of soundproofing.
• Aquachek (green board) — bathrooms, laundries, kitchens near sinks. Water-resistant, not waterproof.
• Wet-area cement sheet — behind tiles in showers, splashbacks.
• Fyrchek (fire-rated) — garage walls that adjoin the house, apartments, some commercial.
• Soundchek — bedrooms next to living areas, home theatres, party walls.

Walls vs ceilings — different game

Ceilings take gravity all day every day, so they use thicker sheets, more fixings, and the joins get taped and coated more carefully. This is why ceiling repairs cost more per square metre than wall work — it's genuinely a harder job.

How the install runs

1. 1Measure, order sheets, deliver on site.
2. 2Ceilings first — sheeted, screwed off to joists.
3. 3Walls next — sheeted vertically or horizontally depending on stud spacing.
4. 4Corner beads on external corners, tape on internal joins.
5. 5Three-coat stopping system, sanded flush.
6. 6Handover, paint-ready.

Common Hervey Bay mistakes

• Standard board used in bathrooms — swells with humidity, fails in 2–5 years.
• Not enough ceiling fixings — sags over time, especially with our summer heat.
• Butt joins landing in the middle of a wall instead of over a stud — cracks guaranteed.
• No control joints on long walls (over ~12m) — thermal movement cracks it.
